Keeping Your Garage Door Working

After I moved into a new home, I realized that there were some real problems with our garage door. It didn't always open easily, and when it did, it seemed to have issues closing all the way. I knew that we had to do something, so I started looking around for a place that offered garage door service. I was able to find an incredible business that offered garage door sales and service, and they helped us to find replacement parts that could resolve the issues. This blog is all about keeping your garage door working well and avoiding repair costs in the long run.

Garage Door Tension Springs, Tracks And Openers: When It's Time For A Repair

by Perry Wilson

An automatic garage door system can stop opening and closing with ease for a range of reasons. Some problems are an easy fix, such as removing debris from your tracks or replacing a missing bracket. Other issues require a professional garage door repair service to take care of the issue, like when the tension springs need to be adjusted or replaced. The opener can burn out and need to be replaced, while a track can get bent and stop allowing the door to open and close correctly. You can look over your garage door system to see what is wrong, but there are times when you will need to call for help to get the repair completed.

Tension Spring Issues and Your Garage Door

Tension springs hold the weight of the door when it moves, making it easier on the opener to open or close your garage door. Tension springs are tightly coiled, and they can snap without warning. It is not safe to adjust tension springs on your own, because you can get hurt in the process if the spring suddenly snaps. You will need new tension springs roughly every 5 to 7 years. If your garage door doesn't stay in the open position or your door suddenly opens very slowly, your tension springs are suspected.

How Long an Opener Should Last

A garage door opener usually lasts about 15 years, but it will burn out early if there is too much strain on the opener. If your opener suddenly starts going slow or struggles to engage to open the door, it may be time for a replacement.

Your Garage Door Tracks

Your tracks have to be perfectly symmetrical in order for your garage door to work correctly. If a bracket goes missing or a track gets bent, you will need to get this repaired. While tracks often last a long time, they may need to be replaced if there is damage to one of the tracks. When your garage door stops or reverses direction in the same location every time, check the tracks to see if there is any debris in the way.

Garage door systems can last up to 30 years, but you'll have to replace tension springs and the opener during this time. Tension springs need replacement every 5 years or so, while the opener can last about 15. Call for garage door services when your door is malfunctioning.
