Garage Door Replacement: A Shrewd Investment

by Perry Wilson

If you have some money to invest into your home, you definitely need to think about how to best spend it. For example, if you are planning on selling your property in the near future, you would probably be more interested in remodels that are cost effective and attractive it to buyers. That is, you aren't necessarily going to choose an extremely ornate and expensive remodel that is only cosmetic. The best upgrades are those that are both cosmetic and practical. New garage doors are a perfect example.

Once you decide to invest in a new garage door system you then have a ton of particulars to figure out. For example, you need to figure out what panel material is going to best fit your home. This article discusses the three most common panel materials.

Aluminum

Aluminum is usually the cheapest of all garage panel materials. It has been around for a long time because it is so lightweight yet strong. Aluminum panels are pressed with wood textures and coated with a layer of durable electrostatic paint. The biggest problem with aluminum is that is thin and conducive. This just means that it does not hold heat well, so controlling the temperature inside your garage can be hard.

Vinyl

Vinyl is very similar to aluminum in many ways, but it is more modern and more practical. It is thicker, giving it better insulation. Since it is now more popular than aluminum, there are more prefabricated products on the market. You will probably have more luck finding a vinyl product that closely matches your home style.

Wood

Wood panels are the most unique of the three options, but they are also the least practical. Most people absolutely love the way that wood grain panels look. On the other hand, most don't love how much maintenance they need. Wood panels need to be restained or repainted every several years to resist moisture and sun damage. Essentially, if you want to keep up the rich wood style and color, you need to do some upkeep. But, wood is a great insulator and most products actually have vinyl frames, with the thin veneer of wood on the outside. So, they have similar strength and functionality of a vinyl product.

When choosing your garage door panels, you basically need to decide what is going to be the most attractive for your particular property and the level of maintenance you are willing to undertake. Contact a company, like Wise Garage Doors, for more help.
