Keeping Your Garage Door Working

After I moved into a new home, I realized that there were some real problems with our garage door. It didn't always open easily, and when it did, it seemed to have issues closing all the way. I knew that we had to do something, so I started looking around for a place that offered garage door service. I was able to find an incredible business that offered garage door sales and service, and they helped us to find replacement parts that could resolve the issues. This blog is all about keeping your garage door working well and avoiding repair costs in the long run.

Uses For Garages, Other Than Car Storage

by Perry Wilson

Many homes come standard with a garage, and if you don't own a car or don't want to devote a substantial portion of your home to car storage, you may be wondering what other things you can do with that space. Here are some ideas.

Storage

Instead of hiring a separate storage facility, you could turn the garage into a storage space with stackable shelving.

Work Room

The garage is a great place to store your craft or home improvement projects. Since the area is detached from your home, fumes from paint or other chemical products won't waft through the entire house as easily.

Guest Room

Garages make a great guest room as well. Just be sure that you add a few more windows and decorative touches to the room, You should also add heating if you haven't already.

Play Area

The garage is a great play area for children. Toys can be left out without the house becoming cluttered. A garage is often adjacent to common rooms that your family uses often, meaning that you will be able to keep an eye on kids while they play. And it's always great to give kids their own area of the house to play in.

What Is Needed to Make a Garage Versatile?

No matter which of these uses you come up with for your empty garage space, or if you choose your own, there are some steps you will probably need to take to make the garage more comfortable as a bonafide part of your home. First of all, your garage door installation may need some attention. An insulated garage door will be key to making the space livable, since it helps you tremendously with climate control. And a door with a sturdy construction is also important so that you feel comfortable leaving valuables in the space; make sure that you are happy with the door's electronic and mechanical locks as well as the strength of the material.

Adding insulation to the side walls may also be needed. Consider your heat source; sometimes, all that is required is a space heater for this addition to your home. Finishing the floors with carpeting or another appealing surface is another way to make the space more appealing. While it may take a bit of money and effort to make your garage more attractive, the money you spend will serve to expand your home.
